2011 Ornament: Texas A&M Women Make NCAA History

The Aggies have done it again! In 2011, Texas A&M brought home yet another national championship. The Lady Aggies made history by defying expectations to win their first NCAA Women's Basketball Championship. When Texas A&M Women's Basketball head coach Gary Blair proclaimed: "We're going to win a national championship" not many could have anticipated the dedication and drive that manifested when the team knocked out national powerhouses like Baylor, Stanford, and Notre Dame to bring home the gold. The Lady Aggies amazed us all with their unparalleled talent and determination by closing out the 2010-11 season with a 33-5overall record (13-3 Big XII Conference) and an incredible victory over Notre Dame. The triumphant win will surely go down in Aggie history as yet another tradition to be celebrated with pride for generations to come. The perseverance, devotion and strength shown by coach Gary Blair and the A&M women's basketball team will forever hold a well deserved place in the hearts of Aggie fans all over the world.

This year's ornament design is fitting for a team of champions. The ornament features an outline of a basketball surrounded by a symbol of victory, the laurel wreath. In ancient Greece laurel wreaths were awarded to victors in athletic competitions, including the ancient Olympics. The laurel wreath serves as a metaphor for the triumph over defeat of a rival competitor. The banner at the top of the ornament highlights the championship title, while the design at the center of the basketball focuses on A&M University's traditional ATM logo.

All proceeds from the ornament sales help support children and adults with disabilities served by the Easter Seals East Texas, Brazos Valley Rehabilitation Center, Bryan, Texas. For more information call 979.776.2872.

Texas Aggie artist Benjamin Knox, ’90, designed this beautiful ornament, as well as many others in the collection, exclusively for the Christmas in Aggieland collectable series. To see and learn about Benjamin and his art, visit www.benjaminknox.com
